Middle School Mathematics and Science

Middle School Mathematics

Middle School Mathematics will introduce a lot of new concepts. Students are expected to already be proficient at addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. At the Middle School level, we will focus on developing an understanding of statistical thinking, completing an understanding of fraction and decimal operations, as well as extending students’ understanding of the number system and geometry. We will also be focusing on using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems, as well as writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations. We are using the Holt Mathematics system of instruction. I think it is an amazing resource because it ties Mathematics to “real life” scenarios and demonstrates every day applications of the subject. Also, Holt has an online resource center that when used in conjunction with the students’ netbooks, should enhance their overall experience.

Middle School Science

Science has become such an ingrained part of our society and culture, through technology and medicine mostly, that our students may not fully realize that we are all scientists on some level! Middle School Science is designed to introduce the core concepts of our entire universe. I am excited to see your children grow as scientists and creative, critical thinkers.

Middle School Science will teach students the language and core concepts of science. We focus on systems, vocabulary, critical thinking, and experimentation. At this level, students have been guided through basic science concepts and experimentation, and now it is time for them to work more independently and think on their own. We are using the Holt Science & Technology Resources as well as various websites and extra material. The students will work to learn new concepts through reading, class discussion, answering questions, and lab work. Lab work will performed both in the classroom and in the Science Lab downstairs. Students will complete a Lab Safety Course BEFORE we enter the Science Lab. Each grade has an individual focus area:

6th Grade: Geology and Environmental Sciences
7th Grade: Biological Systems
8th Grade: Chemistry and Physics
